The Snowbirds decided to award our inaugural Best Show award to Conception Bay South. During 2016, the team flew at 36 different show sites and performed displays or flybys over 60 times. Because the team works so closely with communities and the Air Show industry we felt it important to recognize outstanding support.
Award criteria:
The Snowbirds sat as a committee and concluded that the first time, grassroots, COPA Flight 97 and community supported Conception Bay South Show met or exceeded the award criteria and exemplified the best attributes of a hosting show. The Snowbirds congratulate Jennifer and Minette on their tireless work and all the staff and volunteers who made the show such a success.

From May 12: The Cessna 150 departed on the local night flight in instrument flight rules conditions with 7 miles visibility and overcast clouds at 300 feet above ground level (agl).
Radar data showed it departed the runway, made one flight around the traffic pattern, and landed six minutes later.
It departed again to the west, did not remain in the traffic pattern, and reached an altitude of 740 feet agl. It made a left turn, which tightened as it descended about 1,900 feet per minute.

From Jan. 21: Canadian GA and business aircraft can again take shortcuts over U.S. airspace on their way to Canadian destinations. The FAA has amended a NOTAM issued a couple of weeks ago that made such overflights illegal without special security measures. As we reported last week, the NOTAM, apparently issued at the request of the TSA, cancelled the decades-long agreement between the two countries that allowed Canadian aircraft to transit U.S. airspace without security or Customs requirements.

From May 26: The dawn of cinema occurred just about the same time man first took flight, so it's no wonder airplanes and aviators have been a common theme throughout film history. Some of the best aviation films recount important historical events; some celebrate the achievements of innovators in aviation. Others we can always count on to give us a good laugh.
Here are our picks for the best films ever made about aviation.

From March 10: Thanks to many people who have written in, over the past 24 hours, about another parachute-save episode involving a Cirrus airplane. Recently, over Republic airport on Long Island, a father who had been taking his teenaged daughter to see colleges in Rhode Island had an engine failure while coming back to New York. He pulled the parachute; the airplane came down safely; and then he and his daughter walked away.

From Sept. 29: Ontario's Liberal government denies Opposition charges that it interfered with the witness list for a hearing into a plan to install at least six, 152-metre-high wind turbines near the Collingwood airport.
Progressive Conservative house leader Jim Wilson says the province decided at the last minute to call a witness from NAVCanada instead of an expert from Transport Canada at an Environmental Review Tribunal hearing.

From March 31: One of the best things about flying is the ability to see wondrous sights from a point of view few people ever have. It's a rare privilege to venture to some of the most remote parts of the country so quickly, especially considering the alternative might involve cross-country travel by snowshoe or mule. Wilderness airstrips provide splendid access to these national wilderness treasures.
Bob Bement, now 81, is a fellow who knows a good thing when he sees it.

From Aug. 18: At least once a year, I try to take the temperature of the emerging aircraft diesel engine market. What's selling? Who's buying it? How are they doing with it? A recent sweep through this topic revealed that in new airplanes, not much is selling at all, diesel or otherwise.
With that established, shouldn't the diesel conversions be doing a brisk business, especially since Continental recently raised the TBR on its CD line of engines to 2,100 hours?
