The Dec. 1 deadline to apply to become an APR in 2017 is fast approaching. The APR process has evolved in recent years and now includes an enhanced work sample criteria that offers an opportunity for PR educators and PR degree and diploma graduates to apply. There's also a new APR Challenge Exam stream for Accredited Business Communicators (ABCs) that recognizes their prior accredited status through IABC.
The APR is a full-year process that includes three key elements: a work sample, a written exam and an oral exam. It's internationally recognized and identifies practitioners who have depth of experience and competence in the professional practice of public relations. The program involves a rigorous evaluation of the skills and competencies needed to practice public relations at a senior executive level and establishes standards for professional practice. It measures experience and strategic thinking, and confirms a foundation of knowledge of public relations theory and policy issues.

In 2014, the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management (GA) mandated a multi-year two-phase project to raise and globalize standards for the public relations profession.
The first phase, completed for the 2016 World Public Relations Forum in Toronto, involved an international team of volunteers, led by Canada's Jean Valin, APR, FCPRS, with support from the Canadian Public Relations Society and other GA members. The international team studied all existing professional qualifications and educational standards, identified overlaps, and developed an aggregate document titled the "Global Body of Knowledge" (GBOK).
The GBOK provides a compilation of the current most prevalent knowledge, skills, abilities, and behavioural statements of competency as defined in national professional standards and in numerous workshops with association and industry leaders in all continents.
The second phase, called the Global Capabilities Framework Project, is currently underway, led by Anne Gregory, PhD, HonFCIPR, and Johanna Fawkes, PhD, at the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom. They will conceptually explore if the knowledge, skills, and behavioural statements in public relations, as identified in the GBOK, can be expanded into a global capabilities framework (with local flexibility) that may serve to raise the standards of public relations in the years to come.

It's every marketer's worst nightmare — your product suddenly presents a danger to consumers. It could be Chipotle's E. coli, Blue Bell Creameries' listeria, or General Motors' faulty ignition switches. And yes, it can happen to you. Just ask Samsung, which is now facing $2.3 billion in losses from its fire-catching Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

Younger parents are trying to raise their kids without adhering to gender stereotypes and marketers would do well to pay attention, according to a new study from Harbinger and Ehm & Co.
According to the study, based on the responses of just over 1,600 parents from Ehm & Co's Yummy Mummy Club network, seven in 10 parents say they're more open-minded and easygoing in how they raise their kids in terms of gender norms versus how they were raised.
