Diamond Resorts, a global leader in the hospitality, vacation ownership and entertainment industries, and victims of a timeshare “exit” scams are warning timeshare owners not to work with fraudulent third-party exit companies. Diamond has filed a lawsuit against Newton Group and DC Capital Law Firm, LLP for allegations of false advertising and fraudulent business practices. As part of its complaint, Diamond alleges that the Newton Group deceived former timeshare owners into purchasing illusory timeshare exit services.

Coalition of Hardest Hit Businesses

On September 17, 2020, the Coalition of Hardest Hit Businesses (CHHB) launched a campaign calling on the federal government to extend the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program at the full 75% rate for businesses facing an ongoing revenue decline of 50% or higher, and extend the program until Spring/Summer 2021. The CHHB is an industry-driven group of over 50 stakeholders representing a variety of sectors including tourism, arts and culture, events and festivals, and hospitality.

Canada border with USA staying shut at least another month

Canada and the United States have agreed to extend the temporary restriction of all non-essential travel across the Canada-U.S. border until Oct. 21, 2020.
The previous border closure was due to expire Monday, Sept. 21. An extension of the closure order had been expected for a number of days, as recent polls show a vast majority of Canadians want the U.S. kept sealed as tight as possible.

Palladium Hotel Group unveils fall reopening dates for Mexican, Caribbean resorts

Palladium Hotel Group, which reopened a number of Mexican and Caribbean resorts in July, released an updated timeline for additional property reopenings in both destinations.
Grand Palladium White Sand Resort & Spa, Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa, Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort & Spa and TRS Yucatan Hotel in the Riviera Maya, are scheduled to reopen on Oct. 2.

Airbnb will get to its long-awaited IPO with a spring in its step

Airbnb filed for an initial public offering on August 19, 2020, after a tumultuous second and third quarter in which the company had its hands full dealing with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, including laying off 25% of employees.
The company deciding to go public this year might come as a surprise to many, given that travel is among the hardest-hit sectors of the economy. Airbnb, while not on the public markets, saw its valuation drop from $31 billion (as of its prior funding round in September of 2017) to $18 billion, as part of a $1 billion financing deal in April 2020.

Hawaii to allow travellers to bypass quarantine if they provide negative COVID-19 test

Hawaiian officials recently announced that travellers arriving from out of state would soon be able to bypass the mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival if they provide a negative coronavirus test.
According to The Associated Press, Hawaii Governor David Ige revealed that travellers who take a COVID-19 test with a negative result within 72 hours before their flight arrives in the state would be able to enter without quarantine starting on October 15.
