As a handful of students gathered to learn a new language at the Microsoft store in New York City, a different set of students gathered a world away in Nigeria to embark on a similar journey. The language in both cases is coding, and Microsoft executives are making it a global cause. "Coding is a universal language," said Dona Sarkar, principal product manager at Microsoft. "Coding is the language of solving problems."

LEGO has unveiled a new robotics system that teaches kids computer science skills at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company's Mindstorms platform for teens has been around since 2013, but the new LEGO Boost kit is designed for kids aged seven or older.

More Wisconsin kids might soon be coding in their classrooms. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction says it's working to add new standards for computer science education. One school district already offering computer science courses is the Whitehall School District. As a former computer programmer, math teacher Kristoff Ausderau teaches the school's computer science classes. He says lately he's seen more students take an interest in technology.

The Thomas Jefferson High School senior has her sights set on improving air quality and she plans on using her computer science skills to do it. In a time when girls and women remain significantly underrepresented in fields like computer science and engineering, Leytham is one example of a student working to challenge the stigma that the field of computer science is male-dominated.

After being hired over the summer, a new teacher was eager to get into the room to start decorating her space in anticipation of the first day of school. She was shocked to find an empty, barren room with paint peeling from the walls and stains on the ceiling tiles. Her principal told her there was no money in the budget to paint the room but agreed to let her fund the project on her own. On her first day, she learned one of the hardest lessons of any new teacher: It is expensive to be a teacher.

A new survey from The Learning Counsel finds that nearly four in five (78 percent) students have access to a computing device for "a good portion of the school day" or longer. Sponsored by Ruckus Wireless, the third annual Digital Curriculum Strategy Survey and Assessment Tool is based on responses from more than 700 districts and schools in the United States. Three top trends among the findings were that tablets are losing popularity, Chromebooks have seen a more significant gain in popularity than other devices and there is no consensus among schools as to which devices are best depending upon student age.
