Elementary-Level CS Inclusivity with CSTA Equity Fellow Shiela Lee
CSTA
"As I transition into the STEM/CS role at my school instead of integrating CS into my classroom like I've done for the past eight years, I would love to lead a professional learning community around culturally responsive teaching and fostering identity in computer science." Shiela Lee is a special education elementary school teacher entering her tenth year of teaching in New York City. This is her first year as a STEM teacher and she is committed to creating curriculum that is anti-racist and empowering her students to challenge stereotypes. Lee is also part of the 2020–21 CSTA Equity Fellow Cohort.

Computer scientists: We wouldn't be able to control super intelligent machines
Max Planck Institute for Human Development via Science Daily
We are fascinated by machines that can control cars, compose symphonies, or defeat people at chess, Go, or Jeopardy! While more progress is being made all the time in artificial intelligence, some scientists and philosophers warn of the dangers of an uncontrollable superintelligent AI. Using theoretical calculations, an international team of researchers shows that it would likely not be possible to control a superintelligent AI.

3 strategies to teach STEAM in a blended environment
eSchool News
Before March 2020, there were many conversations about the benefits of minimizing screen time for young learners. Since the pandemic hit, educators and parents have had no choice but to rely on screens to reach and teach students. But screen-based learning is not always developmentally appropriate for young learners, and it is not well suited to some forms of learning. STEAM lessons in particular, with their exploratory and experiential elements, may seem impossible to deliver in a remote learning model.

Strategies for prioritizing self-care this year
Teaching Channel (commentary)
Lillie Marshall, a contributor for Teaching Channel, writes: "It was 1 am on a school night, and I was still grading student essays. I'd skipped doing any exercise that day, and my back was creaking from hunched-over work. Suddenly, I flashed back to the lecture I'd ended class with that same day. '7th graders,' I'd declared to my pupils lovingly, 'please make sure you're taking care of yourselves. Get quality time with loved ones, exercise, healthy food and enough sleep. We don't want you to burn out or get sick! Health and wellbeing are the most important thing — now and always.'"

eShool News
Let's face it: pandemic learning is stressful and exhausting. There is truly no getting away from the fact that trying to engage in any activity that requires maximum brain activity (ahem: teaching and learning) is extra hard while we are trying to survive any kind of trauma. So it is imperative that we come up with ways to lighten our mental load in order to survive, much less thrive.

Teaching interactive hands-on STEM during online learning
eSchool News
One of the many challenges with distance learning is finding ways for students to engage in active and interpersonal learning experiences that increase their understanding of STEM. These types of activities are especially important because they can make abstract scientific concepts more accessible, and engage diverse learners in using engineering processes that are helpful for 21st century careers.

The benefits of developing a reflective routine
Edutopia
Never before has the profession of teaching been more taxing. During this global pandemic, teachers are asked to come to their job each day ready to work, create engaging lessons, and maintain their own mental health and that of their students. In addition, they're asked to toggle between face-to-face and online learning environments, often at a moment's notice.
