Computer science skills are becoming a larger part of mainstream education with the emergence of Computer Science Education Week and efforts to introduce students to coding and programming. Part of those efforts focus on actions states can take to ensure that computer science education is a priority year-round. After all, many of the jobs today's students will hold in the future will require computer science and IT knowledge.

Teayanna Leytham wants to make the world a better place. The Thomas Jefferson senior has her sights set on improving air quality and she plans on using her computer science skills to do it. In a time when girls and women remain significantly underrepresented in fields like computer science and engineering, Leytham is one example of a student working to challenge the stigma that the field of computer science is male-dominated.

The American automaker behind Chrysler and Fiat cars is investing bigtime in Michigan middle grade and high school students. The charitable arm of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC has awarded $226,000 in grants to 57 robotics teams and programs to help students in those schools cover some of the costs of participating in robotics competitions.

You'd think in the age of robotics and artificial intelligence, computer science would be required material for high school students. More often, it is either optional or not offered at all. But nonprofit Code.org is determined to expand access to computer science in schools around the world. In the U.S., some schools offer computer science, often as an elective. In some parts of the world, computer science isn't even on the curriculum.

Here's something to wrap your brain around: Washington state, one of the nation's foremost tech hubs, has historically only offered computer science as an elective in public schools — if it's offered at all. Currently, only one in 10 schools in the state offers courses that teach kids advanced computer science skills. The tides may be turning, however. Attention to computer science education has increased lately, due in part to the overwhelming skills gap between Washington's university graduates and available jobs in the tech industry. Lawmakers are realizing that, in order to remedy this problem, schools need to give all kids an equal shot at learning STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills.
