It's time to close the gender gap. One of the largest gaps is in one of the most high-demand and well-paid careers: computer science. Girls Who Code is a club dedicated to evening out the playing field and now it is coming to Coos Bay. "Currently women pose only 18 percent of the computer science field," said Cayce Hill, youth liaison for Southwestern Oregon Workforce Investment Board, and also a senior at Marshfield High School. "By 2020 there will be 1.4 million job openings and women will only fill 3 percent of that demand. That's worse than it was in the 1980s, and that gap is growing larger."

Until this school year, Pawtucket Schools offered only a smattering of computer programming courses. In fall 2016, the College Board launched a new Advanced Placement course called AP Computer Science Principles, an introductory class about the quickly evolving and indispensable world of computer science. While you may have been eager to take advantage of this new course offering, you may be unsure now what to expect or how to prepare for the end-of-course exam. Beth Brubaker, a contributor for eSchool News, writes: "Throughout my 35 years of teaching, I've watched students grow up in what I lovingly call the 'worksheet generation.' In this environment, students are accustomed to a very structured style of learning, where they are handed a worksheet, then asked to turn to page five in their math book and solve problems one through 15. This approach, however, often teaches students there is only one right answer and limits meaningful engagement and creativity."

Jenny Bristol, a contributor for GeekDad, writes: "I was introduced to higher level Computer Science concepts in high school. I think I took at least one computer-related class each year, sometimes more. We were taught in a pretty straightforward, logical way, from simple concepts up toward more complicated ones. But these days, Computer Science concepts are often taught from such an early age that they aren't taught sequentially, or even in order of complexity. There are books, toys, kits, apps and games that all introduce kids to programming and Computer Science. This seems to be the new way of things. So, let's work with what we've got."
