Before anyone can answer that question, a definition is needed. According to Brianna Crowley in her article, 3 Steps for Building a Professional Learning Network, "A professional learning network is a vibrant, ever-changing group of connections to which teachers go to both share and learn. These groups reflect our values, passions and areas of expertise." I started thinking about my PLN after Brandon Horn on the AP Computer Science Facebook page asked for suggestions for additional information and support for current and new AP Computer Science Teachers. He said he usually recommends the AP CS Community on the College Board site, the AP CS Summer Institute, the AP Computer Science Facebook group and the local CSTA chapter, if there is one.

Florida's Broward County School District is starting young with computer science instruction, integrating it in math and science classes at the kindergarten level. More than 110 of the district's 139 elementary schools are teaching it this year, reaching about 27,000 students. That's a significant increase from last year, when 80 schools taught it to 3,000 students. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has released a statement cautioning states and districts that allowing computer science courses to substitute for a high school math course could "undermine students' mathematics preparation." There's growing consensus that computer science has become an essential skill for college and the workforce. The president has voiced his support for the subject recently and state and local leaders have committed to bringing computer science to their K-12 schools.

Seated in front of monitors, students are eager to show what they're creating using a computer program. "My app is basically based on fitness and health," explained senior Sandra Ortega, whose app helps with weight loss.

President Barack Obama's recently announced initiative Computer Science for All is a call from the highest office that computer science education is important for the future of the nation. CS education is important for all children in the modern era, for sure, but it is essential for students of color, especially black and Hispanic students in the 21st century. Their ability to engage in the workforce and to confront the pressing problems of the world will hinge on their ability to use and adapt computation to their own ends. That does not mean that they have to be advanced computer programmers or software developers while in grade school.

Universities should not bend to the demands of employers who want computer science graduates to know specific programming languages, and instead focus on the fundamentals of the subject. This was one of the arguments made at a conference last month that brought together academics and employers amid deep concern over high levels of unemployment among computer science graduates in the U.K.

How can schools prepare students to be the designers, innovators, and entrepreneurs our economy needs for future success? That was a key area of focus at the 2016 South by Southwest Education conference in Austin, Texas, and a number of ed-tech companies and organizations demonstrated possible solutions. The "maker movement" can play an important role in getting kids interested in innovation and design, and littleBits — which makes easy-to-use electronic building blocks — is finding itself at the center of this movement.
