Which technology is best for K-12 education? This old debate is rearing its head up again. A recent market report shows that despite Google's recent success in the classroom, Microsoft products are outselling everyone else in this niche. By most accounts, Google's Chromebook product has been quietly and successfully leading the K-12 ed-tech market in the last two years. Learning to code is become increasingly prevalent in school curriculum's. From after-school clubs to dedicated class periods, coding and computer science curriculum are popping up in schools worldwide. One place surprising place where coding is also increasingly being used is in programs for students with learning disabilities. There are many benefits of coding for learning and development in LD students. Coding builds important life skills such as organization, higher order thinking, self-esteem, socialization and teamwork, among many others. These skills are intrinsically hard for many children with disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Autism which affects 1 in 68 school aged children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Politicians from New York City to Texas have pledged to expand access to computer science courses in K-12 schools, but one state's efforts stand out for gearing teachers up for the effort. Bringing coding classes to every school in Arkansas was a central tenet of Gov. Asa Hutchinson's 2014 campaign. For parents concerned about their children spending a lot of after school time playing Minecraft, CNET has some words of advice for them: chill. "When they move beyond the basics [of the game], kids can let their imaginations run wild, creating worlds with transporters, flying chickens or rain that springs up from the ground," CNET says. "Along the way, Minecraft's young players learn things like computer coding, engineering, architecture, urban planning and math." Many kids are learning the basics of programming through the popular game. Despite major efforts as of late to beef up computer science programs in America's K-12 schools, it's common knowledge that course offerings are still lacking on a national level. Does this make Minecraft far more than just a game, and instead a national asset?

Eager students gathered for a day long "refugee coding academy" at Seed Spot, a business incubator that buzzed with energy. Students as young as seven typed away on laptops as area tech professionals gave them hands on training in basic coding skills. "I thought it would be cool to have another experience with my friends and get to learn something," a seventh grader Haneen Elshishtawy said. She is from Egypt, but has spent most of her life in the United States. Computer and information technology occupations are projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024 adding about 488,500 new jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

About 100 teens attended a Saturday morning event in Newark, which sought to get black girls to embrace coding and computer science, no matter what profession they plan to enter. Initially, the young women shouted out different terms when asked who they think of as a "computer scientist." "White!" "Boy!" "Asian!" But the speakers squashed the idea that black girls can't be in that group.

Earlier this year on Jan. 8, more than 3,000 school-age teams of robotics students waited anxiously for the challenge that would consume the next six weeks of their creativity. With the challenge in hand, students — along with teachers and mentors — set about preparing for an eight-week competition schedule that culminates later this month as teams from 17 different countries come together in St. Louis to compete in the First Robotics world championships.
