Bobby Schnabel, writes: "A few weeks ago (different dates in different places) our lives switched from physical to virtual. At least the professional parts, as well as much of the family, friends and social parts. It looks like they will remain that way for a while, shift back partially, gradually and perhaps non-monotonically, and may never be 100% the same."

Whether as part of an existing classroom curriculum or as an extracurricular assignment during school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, parents are increasingly turning to online coding programs for their kids. And while many people are looking to learn the latest computer languages, recent news of the shortage of coders who can use the vintage COBOL program, which is causing delays in the processing of nationwide unemployment claims, shows that good programming skills never go to waste.

Amy J. Ko was inspired to study computer science after finding out she could play Tetris on her graphing calculator. While the original game was incredibly slow — you could watch the pieces move by the pixel — Ko and a group of friends were inspired to code a faster version. She eventually majored in computer science, but her interests in human behavior led to a double degree in psychology. While many of Ko’s peers wanted to be software engineers, she paved her own academic path to study how people solve computing problems.

For many people, one of the most challenging elements of the pandemic has proven to be balancing education and childcare with the continual financial demands of living and work. Parents have been handed the burden of making sure their children's development continues uninterrupted even though schools are closed. Fortunately, Google launched a series of past Google Doodles that will feature its most popular games. These games won't serve as replacements for all-day educational stimulation, but at least they're entertaining.

Over 55 million K-12 students have been affected by school closures across the country, impacting 124,000 U.S. public and private schools. Students previously used a blended format for learning, which evolved over the years. Traditional schoolwork and classroom learning were supported by a digital infrastructure and tools like iPads. But in a matter of days, everyone had to shift to 100% online learning. For teachers, this has been an even harder challenge to overcome.

No doubt about it, teaching remotely from your home office or kitchen counter is much harder than facing a room full of kids. Using a video link, such as Zoom, can help. Google Meet, however, goes a step or two further with extra security and functionalities such as the ability to add in auto-graded quizzes. Regardless of if it's to teach the history of the Iroquois Confederation, the parts of speech, or how radioactive decay works, a variety of lessons can be presented over video with Meet.

Digital equity now is an active consideration for educators immersed in remote learning. Thanks to COVID-19, educators should not assume that all students face comparable challenges in terms of being prepared for the school day. The unique challenges and responsibilities that students face at home need to be considered when designing learning activities, assessing mastery and in the way learning support is made available.

Education DIVE
The loss of these connections and their social-emotional benefits may emerge as one of the greatest negative impacts of school closures. Rather than worrying too much about academic performance, some teachers are working to maintain relationships through online learning platforms. This is particularly crucial for students already at-risk prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

District Administration Magazine
As school districts strive and struggle to serve students and communities through the COVID-19 crisis — as we work to provide the best possible education to our diverse student bodies from a distance, under circumstances we've never before encountered — the issue of equity is at the forefront. In schools, poverty is largely hidden as students come through our school doors with eager minds.
