How do you ensure students who excel at math remain engaged? Heidi Williams intended to solve that challenge by starting an after-school coding club while she was a gifted-and-talented teacher at Bayside Middle School near Milwaukee. Instead of using pen and paper, her students created an interactive children's book on Scratch, the MIT Media Lab coding suite that lets users create games, stories and simulations. And the more of this kind of coding activity they did, the better their math test scores got.

THE Journal
The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights recently issued an update on who's taking STEM courses in schools. One big finding: High schools with high black and Latinx student enrollment (those above 75 percent) offered math and science courses at a lower rate than the overall population of high schools. The difference was greatest, the report noted, for advanced math, calculus and physics.

Getting Smarter
The need to prepare students for the future of work is now imperative. To address essential 21st-century skills in our nation's K-12 school system, educators are turning toward a new framework for problem-solving: computational thinking. Computational thinking enables us to solve any given challenge through an analytical and methodical approach. Put simply, computational thinking teaches students to process information like a computer would. It guides students through a series of steps, similar to an algorithm, to solve open-ended problems.

The purpose of blending the arts with STEM is not just to make sure the arts are not left behind as schools focus on improving test scores in core subject areas. The arts give students creative ways to tackle tough concepts, help them ask better questions, and use multiple methods to solve problems, according to a blog post from Concordia University-Portland. A STEAM approach also gives all students opportunities for hands-on learning, increases the chances that girls will stay engaged in STEM-related subject areas, and reinforces the importance of the arts, they write.
