Gonzalo Birrueta didn't just like playing video games as a kid; he liked thinking about how they were made. In middle school, he'd experiment with coding, watching YouTube videos for help. But it was easy to lose motivation — he didn't have many people he could talk to about coding in Quincy, a rural town of 7,000 perched above the Columbia River in Central Washington state. Computer science offerings have grown over the past 10 years, but rigorous courses can be hard to come by, especially in rural areas.

Many adults joke about not being able to do simple math or not being a "science person." Students hear these perceptions and enter the STEM classroom with negative views. This creates a fixed mindset where students believe that you need to already have certain abilities to be successful in math and science. As educators, we need to create opportunities for students to overcome this mindset.

Staten Island Advance
About 150 students and parents from across Staten Island spent a March day filled with computer science and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics activities as part of the Department of Education's Computer Science for All initiative. Students gathered at the Borough President's Hall of Science at the Michael J. Petrides Complex in Sunnyside to join in activities. Families chose from a menu of coding activities, such as Scratch, ScratchJr, Sphero and Lego WeDo that allow students to program robots and create interactive stories, games and animations.

School is out or soon will be for summer — a time when most teachers can kick back and take full advantage of a sun-and-fun break. No more thinking about students and school, right? Wrong! (You knew that. Teachers are always learning.) In my years teaching middle school science, summer was an ideal time to pause, take a deep breath or two, and let my mind wander over lessons and learning that took place during the previous school year.
