Doing more than showing up
CSTA
Hai Hong, a contributor for CSTA, writes: "In recognition of #ShutDownSTEM, I decided to take a break from 'business as usual' to reflect on ways to use my voice to stand up against anti-Black racism. I also explored ways to incorporate a better understanding of structural racism in my day-to-day work in CS education. In addition to COVID and school closures disproportionately impacting communities of color in the U.S., the recent headlines and protests over the deaths of Black people are a stark reminder of the injustice and violence that the Black community continues to face. The news has impacted and galvanized people around the world, including in Germany, where I live."

What Learning Python taught me about computer science education for young children
EdSurge
Madhu Govind, a contributor for EdSurge, writes: "This past semester, I took an introductory Python course with roughly fifty undergraduate and a handful of graduate peers. The course — 'COMP 10: Computer Science For All' — was designed specifically for non-computer science majors. As a researcher exploring coding and robotic technologies for young children, I hoped the experience could provide me with perspective on foundational principles of computer science and how students from different disciplines approach this topic."

Achievement isn't why more men are majoring in physics, engineering and computer science
New York University via Science Daily
Researchers have found that the reason there are more undergraduate men than women majoring in physics, engineering and computer science is not because men are higher achievers. On the contrary, the scholars found that men with very low high-school GPAs in math and science and very low SAT math scores were choosing these math-intensive majors just as often as women with much higher math and science achievement.

Teaching online essentials: National Institute for STEM Education introduces micro certificates focused on virtual teaching skills
The Baytown Sun
While a majority of educators say schools should stay closed to slow the spread of COVID-19, they also say they are less effective working from home, according to a new EdWeek Research Center coronavirus-focused survey. In addition, less than half of teachers say they have taught live, interactive classes during closures, which is raising questions about what teaching will look like in the fall.

With innovation and empathy, remote learning becomes accessible for all students
EdSurge
The COVID-19 outbreak disrupted daily life for virtually every educator, parent, and student in the U.S. It has disabled our education system, creating challenges to educational access, barriers to student academic progress and strains on teachers' and students' physical and emotional well-being. Social and emotional learning can support us in reframing how we think about the challenges created by the pandemic and provide us with the tools we need to navigate those challenges effectively.

How educators can begin to dismantle racism in the classroom
Sheilamary Koch
People in all 50 states continue to take to the streets to support Black Lives Matter and demand an end to racial injustice. 5 anti-racism videos for school staff
We Are Teachers
The killing of George Floyd has revealed the crack in America's porcelain foundation — racism is as pervasive as it's ever been. Protests across the country reveal the undertones of discrimination Black people face daily in the streets, on their jobs, and in schools. The effects of COVID-19 seem to have heightened the dire need for effective change on all fronts. Even if the virus physically separates teachers from colleagues and students, discussing racism — or better, ways to employ anti-racism — should be on every school's agenda for the returning school year.
