Apple updates coding programs and resources for educators and students
Apple Newsroom
Apple announced a new set of tools to help educators teach coding to students from grade school to college. In addition to significant enhancements to the Develop in Swift and Everyone Can Code curricula, Apple is also starting a new professional learning course for Develop in Swift, available to educators at no cost. The course is designed to supplement the need for computer science educators in the U.S., and helps instructors of all skill levels build foundational knowledge to teach app development with Swift.

Startup computer science high school in the hard-hit Bronx made quick leap to remote learning

It was just after 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, when New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the nation's largest school district would transition to remote learning until at least April 20. Chaos ensued, with many teachers still reporting to their buildings the next day and the day after. The Department of Education began ordering 300,000 iPads. Teachers were allowed to use Zoom for instruction, until they weren't, and then they were again.

5 ways esports is impacting education right now

More than 70% of schools are considering starting an esports program, citing an opportunity to improve the campus experience for students and foster STEM learning, according to a survey from Extreme Networks and eCampus News. The report, which surveyed 281 technical and administrative leaders across K-12 and higher education, found that 1 in 5 schools already have an esports program, and 71% are considering or might consider adding a program in the future.

Dallas ISD gets elementary CS ed via Amazon
THE Journal
Dallas Independent School District will be delivering computer science professional development to teachers in all of its elementary schools, thanks to an arrangement with Amazon. The company is working with BootUp, a nonprofit professional development provider specializing in elementary school education, to bring CS to the district's 154 elementaries as part of the Amazon Future Engineer program. The program will reach an estimated 78,000 students.

Virginia Tech launches online coding, cybersecurity bootcamps

Virginia Tech announced it will offer online coding and cybersecurity bootcamps to prepare students and experienced professionals for new jobs in the tech industry. In partnership with Fullstack Academy, a software engineering and coding education company, the 26-week bootcamps are designed to teach participants technical skills to prepare them for emerging coding and cybersecurity jobs in Virginia's workforce.
