Fred Martin writes: "As I'm writing this, it's my last week serving on the board of CSTA. I was first elected to the board in 2014. I was elected as incoming chair in 2016 and served as chair for two years. As chair, I led the search committee which successfully recruited Jake Baskin to become our executive director. It's been six wonderful years. Here are some thoughts about what makes CSTA so great."

Vulnerability can be a strength for educators — Let's embrace it
EdSurge (commentry)
Caitlin Krause, a contributor for EdSurge, writes: "Every teacher I know has had a back-to-school nightmare. We forget our lesson plans. We come unprepared, and students are depending on us. We make fools of ourselves in the very public setting of our classroom. And it's the first day of school, so the students don't know us yet. We haven't yet established a connection. We’re in a room full of strangers — our new students — and we're exposed as incompetent."

Why are students with disabilities so invisible in STEM education?
Education Week
In the United States, we lament the lack of diversity in STEM fields and in teacher education, but many of our actions as educators continue to "weed out" students from nondominant communities and those who are differently abled. Society, parents, and other students need to understand that students with disabilities are as capable of academic achievement as any other student given the proper accommodations that allow for success. This is an issue that should not be limited to the silo of disability studies — it is one that must be recognized by all teachers.

Stress can lead to student failure. New research offers a path for success
Education Week

They will need to catch up on last year's content and learn this year's — all while possibly confronting such issues as social isolation, difficulty with internet or computer access, food insecurity, family responsibilities, and more. For many students, the demands of the schoolwork will exceed the support they have available. Psychophysiologists, who study the connection between the mind and the body's stress system, call this "threat" stress.

House approves billions for broadband, AI and STEM education
Governing
House appropriators have approved hundreds of billions of dollars in government funding for fiscal 2021, culminating in the Appropriations Committee's July 15 approval of legislation that would provide nearly $51 billion for the Homeland Security Department. With all 12 of the annual appropriations bills now approved by the committee, Congress is primed to spend heavily on a wide range of technologies. Appropriators set aside funds for cybersecurity on the eve of this November's elections, rural broadband for unconnected and hard-to-reach Americans, STEM education for the country's youth, and research into quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
