Sign-ups for this year's Wonder League Robotics Competition are now open!
Coding is the new team sport for future tech leaders and innovators. Over 2 months, children in teams of up to 5 will design solutions to real-world science and technology challenges by programming and building extensions for their Dash & Dot robots. They will develop problem solving and creativity skills, learn about issues facing the world around them and build meaningful relationships with their peers. Top teams will be invited to complete the Final Round in Spring 2017.
Solutions are submitted online, so your team can compete from anywhere in the world. It's FREE to participate!
Key Dates:
- Oct. 17 — Registration ends. Competition starts and missions are released!
- Dec. 15 — Deadline to submit solutions.
- Jan. 16 — Finalists announced. Final Round mission is released!
- Feb. 24 — Deadline to submit Final Round solutions.
- March 15 — Winners are announced!

Salesforce announced a donation of $8.5 million to San Francisco and Oakland schools to support computer science education. The San Francisco-based software company will continue a four-year partnership with San Francisco Unified School District. Of the $8.5 million, $6 million goes to San Francisco and $2.5 million goes to Oakland Unified School District. Funding in both districts will go toward hiring math and computer science middle school staff, buying assistive technology for special education students and supporting college and career programs.

Proceeds from the remake of a Black Eyed Peas hit will go to education programs. To music artist Will.i.am, technology can change the world. Recently, Will.i.am, the former Black Eyed Peas singer whose legal name is William Adams, dropped by the Apple Store in San Francisco's Union Square for a screening of the music video for a new version of the group's 2003 hit "Where Is the Love?" He was joined by Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts, and discussed why the proceeds from the song would go toward education programs and initiatives through Adams' i.am.angel foundation.

A 3-D printer maker has introduced a new education resource that encourages people to post their 3-D printing ideas, lessons and design content online. Ultimaker, which produces three 3-D printers, launched its new "Pioneer Program" community website with 58 educators. Teachers in K-12 and higher education share information on how to help students "scan and 3-D print museum artifacts," explore the production of prosthetics for kids and "manage an open 3-D-printing lab."

The United States took home the most number of medals at this year's Summer Olympics in Rio. But what if coding was one of the competitive events? A new HackerRank study reveals that the United States wouldn't stack up quite so well against international competition. The study compiled the results of 1.4 million coding challenges by about 300,000 developers completed on the website HackerRank, a free coding practice website that doubles as a developer recruiting ground for companies such as Facebook and Airbnb. After breaking down the results by country, HackerRank found that U.S. coders landed in 28th place.
