Miles Berry, a contributor for CSTA's The Advocate, writes: "I've no doubt that good CS education involves finding some motivating contexts for getting the ideas across, and for pupils to get to grips with programming. Lots of teachers have found their pupils highly engaged through creating games and animations, or through interacting with the real world through physical computing and robotics, or, perhaps more unusually, through algorithmic art or composing music. I think we could make a good case for adding some data science into this mix, getting pupils to do a little visualisation and exploratory data analysis, and through this starting to answer some genuinely interesting questions."

Coding and programming are all around us and will only get more all-pervasive in the future. For this reason, many are making the argument that learning to code, or at least have a basic understanding of it, should become a common part of a child's education. Here we explore why coding is important, what it is, and where you can learn it for yourself.

Classrooms are dynamically impacted by the dual forces of technological evolution and student expectation. This is especially critical in K–12 environments as millennials age out of the school system and are replaced by Generation Z. McKinsey & Company notes that Gen Z is composed of digital natives who prioritize unique identity and are rooted in the "search for the truth." Student engagement is changing, driven by digital natives looking to combine organic social interaction with science, technology, engineering and math discovery. Cracking the K–12 connection code requires a new approach, one that combines active-learning pedagogy with robotics in the classroom to deliver an interactive, immersive learning experience.

Kindergarten students code a robot bee to move it across a game board. A couple more write their names on a flat screen at the front of the classroom, while others design games on their individual iPad. Technologies like Bee-Bots, Smart Boards and devices stocked with apps have increasingly popped up in Wisconsin classrooms in recent years, as the state rolled out computer science and technology literacy standards for K-12 curricula.

Jane Prey, a contributor for CSTA's The Advocate, writes: "Don't get me wrong, being retired is the best job ever (with teaching a close second!) but I must say I feel very lucky to be able to stay active in the computing education community. Particularly, being the co-chair of the ACM Education Board and participating as a CSTA Board member has given me opportunities to keep learning and participating with people around the world."

Imagine this: You're a teacher at a school that's been on board with STEM since the first little whispers about how it can provide unique learning experiences centered on 21st-century skills. You and the other teachers at your school encourage students to stretch their critical thinking skills and complete projects, but after a couple of years, the STEM program has lost its zest. It needs to grow and to work better for staff and students — but no one is quite sure what would add that extra spark.

Technology is an ideal vehicle for teachers to better blend classroom instruction with learning opportunities occuring outside of the traditional school day — and outside of the brick-and-mortar school building. By bridging the gap between physical and online spaces, schools see their students improve academically and engage with their studies on a deeper level. Blended learning "can provide educators and students with a wealth of actionable insights on student learning, needs and preferences, empowering them to deliver the right learning resources at the right time for the right students," according to the Consortium for School Networking’s Tech Enablers 2019 report.
