CSTA Announces the 2020-2021 Equity Fellowship Cohort

The Computer Science Teachers Association is excited to announce the 15 participants of the 2020–2021 Equity Fellowship, made possible in partnership with Microsoft and Pluralsight One. Following the success of the inaugural cohort, CSTA has expanded this program to include 15 fellows who have demonstrated success in disrupting inequities in K-12 computer science and want to improve equitable access and achievement at a broader scale. These 15 fellows, selected from 131 applicants, have a combined 150 years of K-12 teaching experience, including 80 years teaching computer science, and represent 11 states and provinces.

Gallup-Google research finds that gender gap toward computer science remains

New research has found that female students are still skeptical about the merits of computer science education and show less interest than male students in learning computer science or pursuing careers in the field. While 73% of boys said they were confident they could learn computer science if they "wanted to," just 60% of girls said the same. This was similar to the gender gap that was reported in 2016 in the same survey.

Amazon Future Engineers and CoderZ offer robotics training to Title I schools

The Amazon Future Engineers program is providing Title I teachers access to a free CoderZ robotics course of their choice. The offer is available to the first 1,000 teachers who apply through the CoderZ website. CoderZ produces an online platform that helps students learn STEM skills, including coding, robotics (with virtual robots) and physical computing. Amazon Future Engineer is a learner-to-earner program intended to increase computer science education for children and young people from underserved and underrepresented communities.

How IBM aims to support STEM pathways for Hispanic students

During Hispanic Heritage Month, IBM has announced additional measures to support educational and career opportunities for the Hispanic students. A long-term focus on education within Latino and Hispanic communities can bring forth structural changes in society, Guillermo Miranda, the vice president and global head of corporate social responsibility at IBM, told HR Dive, Education Dive's sister publication. Research by the tech company's Institute for Business Value found that 67% of Hispanic respondents said that they have to work harder to succeed because of their identity.

Try teaching a class full of schoolchildren and connecting with students who are themselves wearing masks. Teachers who in ordinary times rely on their voices to convey nuances of language and manage classroom behavior are tasked with not sounding like the trombone-produced "wah wah" of the Charlie Brown TV specials while protecting themselves and their students from the coronavirus.

Sometimes this happens at home, and sometimes as part of a partially live-streamed classroom. Even taking attendance can be a ten-minute process as students join and leave the call for various reasons, some including technical difficulties.
