.HEADLINES FROM THE FIELD
Educators say computer science lifts students' job options
Gallup Poll
With computing driving innovation in almost every field — art, business, communications, healthcare, STEM, etc. — it is important for students to be exposed to computer science education early to help ensure they can thrive in their careers and as informed citizens. A new Google/Gallup study finds that eight in 10 U.S. school district superintendents either "strongly agree" (42%) or agree (38%) that having computer science education would significantly improve the future career options for students in their school district. Another 14% are neutral on this question, and only 6% disagree.

9 ways to expand computer science equity in high school
District Administration Magazine
Almost half of U.S. high schools now teach at least one computer science course. That means, however, students at a majority of high schools don't have access to computer science, according to a new report. And Black, Latinx and Native American students are less likely to attend a school where computer science is taught, according to "State of Computer Science Education: Illuminating Disparities" by Code.org, the Computer Science Teachers Association, and the Expanding Computing Education Pathways Alliance.

Linking literacy and computer science in elementary school
Edutopia
It has been my experience that many teachers perceive computer science a content area that only a CS educator can support. However, with the right training and mindset, any educator can teach CS — and all should be aware of the broader implications of CS concepts and content.

Indiana recognized as leader in computer science education
The Elkhart Truth
Indiana is receiving recognition for the second consecutive year as a leader in computer science education. A new report created by nonprofit Code.org, the Computer Science Teachers Association and the Expanding Computing Education Pathways Alliance puts Indiana among only five states to meet and implement policies set by Code.org's Advocacy Coalition and recognizes the state as one of only two to require that all elementary education preservice teachers have an understanding of fundamental computer science concepts.

Local educators said they have prepared to meet the state's new computer science standards and now feel ready to prepare students for the Wyoming Department of Education's proposed performance standards. Public comment on the performance standards is currently open through Nov. 30. According to the WDE website, computer science content standards went into effect Feb. 4, 2020, and performance standards are expected to be fully implemented by the start of the 2022-2023 school year.

3 lessons learned about distance learning
Teaching Channel
Teachers are heroes. Who could have imagined a year ago that educators would be called upon to rapidly pivot from schooling as we have known it to remote learning? In a matter of days, districts around California were figuring out how to get devices, food and materials into the hands of students. Teachers converted to new platforms, and in the process, families gained an even deeper regard for what we do every day.

How it's done: Hands-on STEAM learning in a remote world
Tech & Learning (commentary)
Tzvi Hametz, a contributor for Tech & Learning, writes: "When school abruptly shut down in March, much of the instruction was limited by the conditions of distance learning. When planning for the start of the 2020-21 school year, I was determined to keep hands-on, playful learning going because I believe it is important, especially during times of crisis. I knew that students would be even more engaged and have better learning outcomes if I could send home the STEAM solutions I use in the classroom."

Questions about virtual parent teacher conferences? We've got answers.
We Are Teachers
Parent-teacher conferences can be a challenge even at the best of times. Adding technology to a virtual conference can feel like a blessing or a curse — or both. The good news is, the general purpose of a conference remains the same. You and the parents are both there to help create the best possible outcomes for the student.

7 things all kids deserve in remote learning
We Are Teachers
There's a lot that we can make work in remote learning. It's been amazing to see how teachers have found all kinds of ways to teach their students across a screen. There's also a lot that we can't control. In person we can rest assured that our students have equal access to materials and resources. But it's harder to give students an equal playing field when they're learning at home.

Big ideas to redesign K-12 for the automation age
The Brookings Institution
Automation and artificial intelligence are transforming work at a dizzying pace. Rapid technological advances will require a forward-looking workforce that is ready to adapt. While much of the policy discussion has focused on the role of college, not all students attend college, and not all who do are ready for a rigorous technology-driven education. To prepare students for an increasingly automated future, we need to modernize K-12 education. This need is particularly obvious as children return to school this year; because of COVID-19, some students are learning online, others in person and others in pods made up of children whose parents can afford to hire personal teachers.
