Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has signed a bill to allow high schoolers to apply a computer science credit toward math, science or practical art credits needed for graduation. It takes effect in Dec. 18. The legislation also calls for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to roll out an online course intended to boost career awareness for science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions.

Idaho is only the second U.S. state to implement all of Code.org's policies for computer science education, Idaho STEM Action Center announced Oct. 30. The other state, Arkansas, met the recommendations in spring 2017. Code.org is a nonprofit that focuses on improving access to computer science — particularly, for women and underrepresented minorities. "Computer science is critical for every student, and Idaho continues to lead the way in making computing and STEM education opportunities available in our state's K-through-career education system," Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter said in a statement.

Jahi Ayala learned about the computer skill of binary coding the other day and he's eager to talk about it. "It's like speaking a whole 'nother language. It's just so unique," gushed the 14-year-old ninth grader at Tara High. "I love how it's just ones and zeros. I love just talking in binary messages. I set up an entire alphabet." Ayala is among 31 students enrolled at this Baton Rouge public high school’s new Cy-TECH Academy, which began accepting students this summer from across East Baton Rouge Parish.

Students in Lane, Deschutes and Jefferson counties could soon benefit from a $642,000 grant awarded by the federal government that aims to expand and improves the transition of students in high school Career Technical Education programs to post-secondary education and employment. The funding will give students enrolled in Career Technical Education programs more opportunities for apprenticeships in science, technology, engineering and math fields, including computer science, according to Oregon Department of Education spokesman Marc Siegel.
