As today's technology gets into the hands of younger and younger kids, a high school class of coders looks extremely natural creating an app. In a recent Kenowa Hills computer science class led by teacher Ed Beickman, the students catch on quickly while coding android apps. "They started off the school year designing games and are now doing a survey taker app," said Beickman, in his second year teaching at Kenowa Hills, but first year using Project Lead the Way, a national program that offers curriculum, training and resources for STEM-related courses. "We're now designing an app that serves a purpose, makes your life or job easier: purposed based programming."

U.S. Department of Education
The U.S. Department of Education announced today that it invested $540 million to support science, technology, engineering and math education, including computer science, through discretionary and research grants in Fiscal Year 2019, in accordance with President Trump's directive to foster expanded opportunities in these in-demand career fields. "This Administration continues to make strategic investments in STEM education and is working to ensure that all Americans access to high-quality STEM education no matter where they are in their life-long learning journeys," said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. "I'm thankful to the President for his leadership on this issue and his commitment to the success of all of America's students."

Detroit schools are getting ahead of the program. Computer science course offerings are expanding rapidly in the city — faster than the rest of the state. In Detroit, 18 schools offer Advanced Placement computer science, including district and charter schools, according to the College Board, the company that administers the courses and the tests that follow. Three years ago, not a single school in the city offered the AP course.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced deals with 11 universities with the goal of graduating 31,000 students studying computer science and related fields over the next 20 years. Virginia Tech and George Mason University have made the largest commitments of the participating universities, together pledging nearly 24,000 bachelor's and master's degree graduates. In return, the state is providing funding to the institutions so they can expand their computer science programs and meet workforce demand for technically skilled workers.

But they’re less likely to understand the purpose of sponsored content on a website, use generic mapping software or know how to control color and text when creating a presentation.
Those are among the 2018 results of the International Computer and Information Literacy Study released by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, which also conducts other large-scale international studies.
