EdSurge (comentary)
Kimberly Rues, a contributor for EdSurge, writes: "I don't remember the exact date I fell head over heels in love with coding, but I vividly remember the precise moment. I was in a Kindergarten classroom, co-teaching with a very brave and incredibly open-minded teacher, when I looked across the room to see a 5-year-old boy standing, feet spread, arms flung wide as the biggest smile you can imagine graced his face."

STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — are highly technical, which is one reason that the education system is changing to further incorporate these subjects into the curriculum. As more and more fields require technical knowledge, it is a good idea to equip our young learners with basic STEM skills early on. With online schools, it is invaluable to start teaching these concepts at a young age, which is why STEM curriculum is now being introduced at the elementary level.

Now more than ever, it's crucial to harness the full potential of STEM to tackle climate change, address public health challenges and advance technology. And there's a growing recognition that we won't be up to the task if we don't ensure all students have access to foundational math training, authentic STEM learning and high-level, career-relevant STEM courses. Right now, students of color and low-income students are too often shut out of these learning opportunities — too often because the courses and other opportunities are never made available to them.

Saint Patrick's is a small, pre-K–8 Catholic school in Yorktown Heights, New York. Last year, we received a grant to revamp our computer lab into what we call a STREAM lab, which stands for science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math. The grant allowed us to invest in 30 new MacBook Airs to supplement our existing iPads and Chromebooks. Before we spent a cent, though, we made certain to connect every purchase with our two important goals: improving each individual child's academic and career prospects, and improving our students' scores on state assessments, which are critical to whether we're succeeding or failing as a school.
