The White House announced new initiatives to bolster computer science in K–12 education. Citing the rapidly expanding demand for technology jobs, the Obama administration outlined new efforts by two federal agencies: The National Science Foundation plans to spend $20 million on computer science education in 2017, on top the the $25 million it spent in 2016, with an emphasis on training teachers.

The campaign will feature support from superstar athletes like Kobe Bryant, the Golden State Warriors Draymond Green, Serena Williams, Neymar Jr, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo Vieira from Real Madrid C.F. and the Seattle Storm's Sue Bird.

Computer Science Education Week, running from Dec. 5-11, is sponsored by the Computing in the Core coalition and is organized by Code.org. This year, the event is even more significant–after intensive work, Code.org and partners launched the K-12 Computer Science Framework to help more students access programming opportunities.

Despite the growing number of computing job openings, only 1 in 4 U.S. schools offer computer science classes, according to the White House. To expand its computer science initiative, Teach for America Kansas City announced that the organization received a donation of $100,000 from AT&T's philanthropic arm, AT&T Aspire. The partnership's goal is to expand computer science education to low-income communities and reach more than 150 area students with professional development programs as well as resources for teachers. With AT&T's support, Teach for America Kansas City members will have access to computer science curriculum and professional development.

Rhode Island is well along in Gov. Raimondo's program to establish computer science classes in all public schools. Her Computer Science for Rhode Island program, the governor said, drew U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. to the state to celebrate Computer Science Education Week.
