Well, the future is here at Montour Elementary School in Pennsylvania. Now, students experience an autonomous mobile robot every day in hallways, as it performs delivery tasks. It is part of the Montour School District’s Artificial Intelligence K-12 program.

More than 160,000 students received some form of computer science education during the 2018-2019 school year, a record high, the DOE reports. That number represents a 72 percent increase in the number of students from receiving computer science education since the Computer Science for All initiative was launched in 2016. During its first two years, the number of New York City high school students taking an AP computer science class quadrupled from 1, 137 to 5,190.

At McCall-Donnelly high school the focus in AP Computer Science is on programming. Students decide what projects they want to tackle during the multi-year course. A Maryland school system intends to make robotics ubiquitous, including development of robotics teams for every school by 2021. Carroll County Public Schools explored the initiative during a November board meeting, when the district announced that it would incorporate the FIRST Robotics program in elementary, middle and high school. The work was undertaken based on community feedback that expressed a desire for "more STEM and robotic experiences" for students.

On a visit to a class in Sitka, Alaska, we watched second grade students gain incredible experiences in computer science skills. The teacher, Cindy Duncan, believes in teaching young children to code, so she begins the year by introducing students to Ozobots through stories. She used "The Gingerbread Man" and taught dyads of children to develop story characters. "I teach coding and robotics because as an educator it is my job to recognize that my students are global innovators, thinkers and problem solvers," she explained.
