EA Industry Spotlight is a roundup of bit-sized articles covering our field. This April, we review a report which identifies the four leading developments shaping the EAP and wellness industries in 2017, look at a new study on self-harm in caregivers of people with dementia, as well as discuss a trend in insurance companies removing obstacles to patients seeking medication to treat their opioid addiction. The EA Professional Spotlight focuses on Joseph Feleppa, an EAP affiliate provider. And there's more.

America's neighbor to the north is fast moving toward legalizing recreational marijuana nationwide, which would make Canada the second country in the world to do so. And the impact of having weed legalized on such a big scale, so close to home, may affect the future of pot in the United States.
"There are those who sometimes regard Canada as the 51st state. It would be an important signal about the movement coming of age. It would add to the critical mass," says Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer, a member of Congress' newly-formed Cannabis Caucus who is pushing to change the way the federal government treats the substance. And, he says: "It would shift the center of gravity."

Each year, EAPA's annual awards celebrate the achievement of individuals and organizations who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to the EA profession and/or EAPA. Selection of recipients is the responsibility of the EAPA Awards Committee. This year, the awards will be presented at the 2017 EAP Conference in Los Angeles. Membership on the Awards Committee will require a total time commitment of around four hours to review nominations and select winners via conference call. The committee is looking for individuals working in external, internal and labor EA settings in the US and other countries to represent the diversity of EAPA's membership. You must be an EAPA member to serve, and committee members are not eligible to receive an individual award. If you are interested in participating, please email webeditor@eapassn.org. Include a brief description of your current and previous roles as an EA professional.

Telemedicine is not only convenient for employees who don't have to take time off work for an appointment, but also helps employers reduce the cost of hospitalizations. While two-thirds of employers currently offer employees access to telemedicine services, that number is expected to increase to 90 percent by 2018.

Sleep deficits can make focusing, finishing assignments, and coping with everyday stress seem daunting. To make matters worse, people with anxiety and depression often have sleep problems.
To date, little has been known about whether or how their poor sleep affects a specific region of the brain known to be involved in regulating negative emotional responses. But a new study from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine finds that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex may have to work harder to overcome negative emotional responses in people with poor sleep who have depression or anxiety.

When the New York Times revealed that Fox News host Bill O'Reilly had reached settlements with five women over sexual-harassment claims, Fox responded by saying that the company takes workplace matters seriously — noting that it had addressed the accusations, despite the fact that none of O'Reilly's accusers had called the company's internal ethics hotline to anonymously register their complaints. Lisa Bloom, the lawyer who represents Wendy Walsh, one of the now eight women who have allegedly been harassed by O'Reilly, said that at first the statement irritated her — but then it gave her an idea.

Have you ever felt you're having a difficult time going to work due to your mental health?
It's estimated that 500,000 employees call in sick every day in Canada due to mental illness. Depression and anxiety cost the Canadian economy at least $32.3 billion a year, and $17.3 billion a year is lost in foregone GDP due to lost productivity, according to a recent Conference Board of Canada report. When a person with a mental health issue needs to take time off from work, their organization's attendance management policy will define their leave options, but employees also have an important responsibility in this process.

A new survey by the National Safety Council taken last month revealed that 70 percent of businesses say that prescription drug use — particularly use of narcotic painkillers — has affected their business.
According to the CDC, 91 people per day are dying in America from prescription drugs and heroin overdoses. And it's not just a problem that is affecting the stereotypical homeless junkie on the corner begging for money.
