In 2010, EAPA's Research Committee conducted a survey of in progress or recently completed dissertations in the field of employee assistance. The intention was to support and disseminate scholarly work in our field. This initiative led to a number of conference presentations, publications and the development of professional networks for aspiring scholars of the EA profession. The EA Practice Based Research Network seeks to continue the process of engaging doctoral students pursuing work in EA and workplace behavioral health. For more information on research interests and objectives, read the PBRN's 2015 White Paper. If you are a scholar interested in EA or know of such an individual, contact Daniel Hughes, Ph.D., CEAP at daniel.hughes@mountsinai.org.

Acts of violence against nurses and doctors in recent years have spurred the introduction of new legislation in states across the country designed to stiffen penalties against those who assault healthcare workers. But while lawmakers have begun to take notice of the problem, data from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Foundation's "2017 Healthcare Crime Survey" shows that incidents of workplace violence continue to plague hospitals at an alarming rate.
The study, which analyzed the responses of security professionals at 222 U.S. hospitals, found that "Workplace Violence Type 2" assaults, which are acts of violence committed against hospital staff by patients and visitors, accounted for 89 percent of all assaults and aggravated assaults at hospitals from 2012 to 2016.

Workers at McLane drive forklifts and load hefty boxes into trucks. The grocery supplier, which runs a warehouse in Colorado, needs people who will stay alert — but prospective hires keep failing drug screens.
"Some weeks this year, 90 percent of applicants would test positive for something," ruling them out for the job, said Laura Stephens, a human resources manager for the company in Denver.
The state's unemployment rate is already low — 3 percent, compared to 4.7 percent for the entire nation. Failed drug tests, which are rising locally and nationally, further drain the pool of eligible job candidates.
