The rampage that killed five employees at an Orlando area business that sells RV and camper awnings is part of an increasing trend of workplace violence, experts say.
The killings are the deadliest single act of workplace violence since the San Bernadino, California, attack in December 2015, said Kathleen Bonczyk, a researcher who focuses on workplace violence.
Syed Rizwan Farook, who worked at the public health department in San Bernardino, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 people and hurt 22 before they died in a shootout with the police. There were 417 homicides at workplaces across the country in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Three hundred fifty-four of those were shootings, a 15 percent increase from the previous year. It was the first time the number of shootings had increased since 2012.

However, African-Americans (but not Hispanics) have a higher risk for binge drinking compared to whites aged 50 and older.

Some business owners and managers may prefer to keep their heads in the sand rather than confront the nationwide opioid addiction epidemic that is impacting their workplaces.
That's understandable. Laws and procedures regarding the use of illegal drugs are much more straightforward when it comes to enforcing "drug-free workplaces." Dealing with the use and abuse of legal prescription drugs can be more challenging.
But the National Safety Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes health and safety, recently released a report and industry-specific calculator that is intended to be a big slap on the head to employers who chose to believe "ignorance is bliss."

Everyone's been there: You're standing over your desk and either uploading a presentation, syncing off-site data storage or trying to access a video call with an important client when a buffering pinwheel immediately offsets denial, anger, bargaining and... you get the picture. Poor internet connectivity is a good cause for grief, and in a high-stakes environment, recent evidence shows that a bad connection can even cause some harmful physical side effects.

Employee wellness isn't simple, and it's not a one-step process. Employee wellness is complicated because of all the factors that contribute to health and wellness. While providing fresh fruit in place of donuts for a morning team meeting is a step in the right direction, it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of employee wellness.
