We all know addiction is a disease. It has been so classified by all the authoritative sources. The American Medical Association labeled alcoholism an "illness" back in 1967. The Centers for Disease Control, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and Alcoholics Anonymous urge us to think of alcohol and drug addiction as diseases. Addiction-as-disease is in some ways a thoroughly American idea. The same emotional toughness that allows first responders to cope with everyday trauma can work against them, Moriarty said. If they believe they can handle anything and that nothing could bother them, they are less willing to seek out help.
He explained how there can be trust issues associated with appearing weak in a work culture that prides itself with being tough in the face of crisis.
