The World Health Organization considers depression a monumental problem, specifically the leading cause of disability worldwide. That’s ahead of widely publicized contenders such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Reading the news today, you might conclude depression leads inevitably to suicides, school shootings or altercations with the police. Can this darkest of human frailties ever point the way to something better?

Employers use job applications to seek information about conviction records. Criminal background checks are often performed before hiring an employee. Why? The reasons seem obvious, but unfortunately, how the information can be used is not.
Employers are stuck in a “holding cell” when it comes to addressing applicants and employees with arrests and criminal convictions. There is an ongoing debate in employment law circles regarding the information that employers should obtain about applicants and employees and how that information should be used.

No organization wants to burn out its employees. And yet, according to new research, companies’ efforts to prevent prolonged stress among their staffs are falling short.
When Deloitte recently surveyed 1,000 full-time employees in the United States, we found that that 77 percent had experienced burnout at their current jobs, and more than half said they’d felt it more than once. This was true even though 87 percent of respondents said they “have passion for their job.” In fact, among those highly engaged workers, 64 percent said they were frequently stressed. At the same time, nearly seven in 10 people told us they feel their employer “does not do enough to minimize burnout,” while one in five told us they don’t believe their employer offers any stress-reduction programs.

Does ADHD qualify as a disability?
Should meeting and work rooms be inclusive and accessible to everyone?
Could it become standard to have real-time captioning on audio content and training for company employees?
Could more managers be trained in Mental Health First Aid or similar programs that teach the skills to the signs of mental illness and substance use?
The answer to all of these questions is yes. Still, research shows that many workplaces have a culture that is unfriendly and even toxic, particularly to people with mental health issues. The upside is that it is clear that hiring people with disabilities is proving to be good for business.

Approximately 102 million Americans work in the service industry, according to the Pew Research Center, filling critical positions in restaurants, salons and transportation. In many cases, these jobs offer base pay at rates up to 71 percent lower than federal minimum wage, with the expectation that tips, which are highly unpredictable, will make up the difference. However, service workers who rely on tips are at greater risk for depression, sleep problems and stress compared with employees who work in non-tipped positions, according to a study published today in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
