The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued a letter asking millions of U.S. medical practitioners to 1. Educate themselves to treat pain safely and effectively, 2. Screen patients for opioid use disorder and provide/connect their patients with evidence-based treatment and 3. Help to shape public opinion about addiction by talking about and treating addiction as a chronic illness (not a moral failing). In addition, professionals are asked to pledge to take these three steps. Learn more.
EAPA opens election period for 2016 — 2018 Board of Directors

The EAPA Nominations Committee has put together a slate of officers and directors to comprise the 2016-2018 EAPA Board of Directors, and members will vote to ratify those selections. The slate consists of candidates for President Elect, Secretary-Treasurer, 3 At Large Directors (residing outside of the U.S.) and 4 At Large Directors (residing within the U.S.) All current EAPA voting-eligible members received an email on Aug. 25 that provided them with login credentials and a link to the voting website. Please watch for that email and safeguard your login credential until after you have submitted your vote. If you did not receive this email, or have questions, please contact elections@eapassn.org or EAPA staff member Chris Drake (findir@eapassn.org) for assistance. Voting will close at the end of the day on Friday, Sept. 23.

Employers frequently struggle to know how best to accommodate mental disabilities, especially when those same disabilities cause disruption in the workplace.
Last month, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals determined that the employer is not required to accommodate an employee whose disabilities result in disruption to the workplace, and upheld her termination.

The John J. "Jack" Hennessy Scholarship Fund is established in memory of and in tribute to former EAPA President and EACC Chair Jack Hennessy, in recognition of his tireless efforts to advance the professional growth of both labor affiliated and non-labor affiliated employee assistance professionals. The Fund will award two scholarships, one to a labor affiliated member, and one to a non-labor affiliated member, to cover registration costs to attend the 2016 World EAP Conference in Chicago. Persons engaged in agriculture (farmers, ranchers, farm laborers, fishers and lumber harvesters) have the highest suicide rate among 30 national Standard Occupational Classification groups, at 84.5 per 100,000 persons in 17 states that were studied. A national program called the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network could help distressed farmers and their families and save lives if it were available.

When Brigham and Women's Hospital researcher Douglas Mata began searching for research on depression in residency a few years ago, he was surprised to find that no comprehensive studies existed.
So he set out to do one himself.
"We found about 54 studies that we extracted data from and combined together, and then we were able to show that, overall, the prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms is about 29 percent among residents, which is a huge number," he said. In fact, figures from the National Institutes of Health show it’s more than four times higher than the percentage of the general American population that has depression.
