The number of Americans affected by opioid use disorder has been greatly undercounted, according to a new analysis, and funding to combat the crisis hasn't kept up with the need.
As many as 6 million people in the U.S. are experiencing opioid use disorder, nearly three times higher than the federal government's estimate of 2.1 million, global management consulting firm McKinsey and Co. revealed in a new white paper. The figure stems from Massachusetts' Medicaid beneficiary data.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has raised alarm about pet owners misusing opioids prescribed to their animals. A recent study which surveyed Colorado veterinarians about opioids found 13 percent knew of an animal owner who intentionally injured an animal to obtain opioids and 44 percent of the veterinarians were aware of opioid abuse or misuse by either a client or a veterinary practice staff member.

A study looking at how tiredness and fatigue impacts performance found that three in 10 workers have had an accident, made a serious mistake or felt exceptionally stressed as a result of tiredness.
