Burnout is real, on the rise, and retractable
Psychology Today
“I am OVER quarantine today. You?” That was the email I received from a beloved former client just a few days ago. I laughed, whole-heartedly agreed, and felt pangs of sadness. Some days I feel like I am drowning in a puddle. Other days, I feel okay. What I don’t feel is how I did six months ago. Being in quarantine for months has put a huge strain on everyone’s wellbeing. As a result, whether we’re aware of it, we are now all putting a lot of energy into simply avoiding burnout.

Lower earners more likely to become ill or injured at work, warns think-tank
Personnel Today
Lower earners are twice as likely to become physically ill or injured at work as higher earners, new research has warned, prompting a call for a more joined-up approach to injury prevention across government and business. According to the think-tank the IPPR, 5.8% of people on the lowest incomes (or what it classified as being within the “third hourly income decile”) have been injured or become unwell through their work. This compared to just 2.1% of highest earners (or those in the “tenth income decile”).

Opioid addiction may require accommodation, EEOC reasserts
HR Dive
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may require employers to provide accommodations to workers who "are using opioids, are addicted to opioids, or were addicted to opioids in the past" and are not currently using the drugs illegally, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said in technical guidance released Aug. 5.

6 key considerations in protecting employee health
Canadian HR Reporter
There are several ways employers should be considering, and working to protect, the health of employees during the pandemic, say an expert. For one, accommodating vulnerable workers is more essential than ever during COVID-19, even though many of them are working away from the office. An employer’s responsibility for health and safety procedures doesn’t end at the office doors, says Hope McManus, head of health and safety at HR consultancy Peninsula Canada in Toronto.

Stress may cost employees up to 2 hours of work per day, survey shows
HR Dive
Employees are stressed and it’s costing some of them up to two hours of work per day, according to the results of a recent Headspace survey. Of the 2,500 respondents — employed adults in the U.S. and U.K. — roughly a quarter said they lose about an hour of work per day to stress. Twenty-one percent said they lose up to two hours.

Scientists compared yoga and therapy for chronic anxiety, with mixed results
ScienceAlert
Some types of yoga focused on mindfulness and meditation might help to treat generalised anxiety disorders, but perhaps only in the short term, a new trial suggests. While cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) remains the gold standard for those experiencing chronic nervousness and worry, recent evidence suggests yoga could be a promising complementary treatment — at least for some.

Employment was already hard for some in addiction recovery. The pandemic made it even harder
Cincinatti.com
Amanda Roberts was almost never without employment. Dependable, she repeats. She worked for an honest wage during a 17-year stint as a Kroger assistant manager. She bore the signature royal blue polo shirt and clocked in on time. Even during her five-year fentanyl addiction, Roberts supported herself. Her children. Her lifestyle. Where she spent her days chasing a high. "I worked for it," she says, "Never relied on a man. Never stole." But three years ago, Roberts walked out of Kroger's doors. Last summer, she stopped using. She's still out of work.

4 conversations leaders in the #MeToo era should be ready for
Harvard Business Review
The #MeToo movement broke the silence on sexual harassment in the workplace, inspiring leaders in every industry to reckon with their organizations’ culture — and their own behavior — to build a work environment that’s safe and supportive for everyone. And as more and more people open up about their experiences with harassment and abuse, leaders can pretty much guarantee that they’ll find themselves dealing with these issues at one point or another.

Absenteeism and presenteeism: 2 issues that should matter to your business
Business 2 Community
You’ve probably heard the terms absenteeism and presenteeism before, but do you really understand how much of an impact these workplace issues can have on a company? These issues go far beyond employees calling in sick too often or taking care of personal admin once they log in at work. On average, absenteeism can cost a company $1,685 per employee each year in the U.S., while presenteeism can cost companies up to $150 billion annually. In other words, these are not small issues, and they’re certainly not ones managers or leaders should ignore.

Culture change needed for LGBTQ employees to 'feel at home' at work
Forbes
Let’s focus on something other than COVID-19 for a change. In fact, let’s focus on change: In particular, the changing face of the U.S. workforce—and the changes companies need to make to attract, retain and engage this widely heterogeneous workforce in the future. I’m talking specifically about company policies and efforts [There’s a difference.] to promote diversity and inclusion, and the moral, legal and fiduciary obligation of company officials to create open-arms policies that make their firms magnets for top talent.

Study identifies social connection as the strongest protective factor for depression
Medical Xpress
Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have identified a set of modifiable factors from a field of over 100 that could represent valuable targets for preventing depression in adults. In a study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry, the team named social connection as the strongest protective factor for depression, and suggested that reducing sedentary activities such as TV watching and daytime napping could also help lower the risk of depression.

Why getting prescriptions by mail is stressing out employees and stretching the USPS to its limits
Forbes
You may think of the future of the United States Post Office (USPS) as, more or less, a political issue. I see it as a huge employee health issue right now. This should put the issue into perspective: Google the words, What happens if I miss... and you won’t get phrases you might expect like: “What if I miss….paying rent or unemployment filing…” Instead the search box shows, what if I miss... a dose of Zoloft, ...a dose of metaformin, ...a dose of prednisone. A generic option also made the top of my search was ....what if I miss a pill?
