Pandemic has more Americans turning to alcohol

Is the coronavirus pandemic driving people to drink? Yes, a new U.S. survey shows, and the greatest spike in alcohol use is being seen in women. Overall, there was a 14% jump in drinking frequency this past spring among U.S. adults over 30 when compared to last year at the same time, researchers found. Among women, drinking frequency went up 17%.

Drug use rises among US workers amidst the pandemic

Lockdowns, social distancing, layoffs, and uncertainty about the future are well-documented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research also shows higher rates of substance use and misuse. A May 2020 report by Well Being Trust and The Robert Graham Center says, "The growing epidemic of ‘deaths of despair’ is increasing due to the pandemic — as many as 75,000 more people will die from drug or alcohol misuse and suicide."

Depression and anxiety tripled during the height of lockdown, new study shows

There was a three-fold increase in the number of people reporting significant depression and anxiety problems during lockdown, a study involving scientists from the University of Sheffield has found. The research revealed that, during the coronavirus lockdown in April, the proportion of people reporting clinically significant depression and anxiety problems reached 52 percent, three times more than the pre COVID-19 average of 17 percent.
