It's a nurse practitioner's array of capabilities, coupled with the fact they can work independently of physicians when treating patients, that makes the No. 2 healthcare job an attractive career choice. The BLS predicts 37,100 new positions for these professionals between 2012 and 2022.

Report sees low hematoma risk from regional anesthesia during joint surgery

Despite concerns about the risk for hematoma during spinal or epidural anesthesia, the rate of complications among patients undergoing joint replacement surgery is extremely low, according to new research released at the 2013 annual Euroanaesthesia meeting. The poster was named one of the best of the meeting.

IV saline in short supply

Hospitalists across the country are reporting a shortage of IV saline solution, blaming manufacturing problems and increased demand from a harsh flu season. The FDA said in a drug safety communication that it's aware of the shortage and is working with three manufacturers — Baxter, Hospira and B. Braun Medical — to "preserve the supply of these necessary products."

Medicaid expansion bill filed in Florida House

The Senate proposal to accept federal Medicaid expansion dollars to provide insurance for poor Floridians now has a House companion. Rep. Amanda Murphy, D-New Port Richey, recently announced she would be filing a bill to compliment SB 710 sponsored by Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah.

Report: Florida ranks low on ER access
Health News Florida
In a report that ranks states on emergency care, a national physician group says Florida is average overall but near the bottom on access to care. The American College of Emergency Physicians' report, released recently, gave Florida an F in the category of access to emergency care, ranking it 49th in the nation. Overall, the state received a C-minus, which was above the nationwide average of D-plus.

Acquisitions bring Mednax's anesthesia group to 2 dozen
South Florida Business Journal
Mednax increased the size of its American Anesthesiology division to two dozen practices after making an acquisition in Baltimore. The Sunrise-based company bought Physicians Anesthesia Associates for an undisclosed cash sum. The medical group, formed in 1973, has employees 31 anesthesiologists, 17 anesthetists and two administrative support staffers.
