Goal-directed fluid therapy reduces morbidity, costs

An augmented approach to perioperative fluid management of complex surgical patients can lower the risk for postoperative morbidity by up to 29 percent and reduce health are costs by up to $970 per patient. The projections are based on a combination of actual clinical and cost data from the University HealthSystem Consortium and findings from studies of the impact of perioperative goal-directed fluid therapy.

Use of cuffed tracheal tubes in neonates requires caution

The use of cuffed tracheal tubes is increasingly popular in pediatric anesthesia, but investigators have found that there is a risk for increased trauma without proper diligence. To gain more understanding of the subject, researchers electronically surveyed members of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia. The study found that the use of cuffed tracheal tubes in elective surgery increased with patient age.

Survey: Preoperative screening of obstructive sleep apnea

My name is Adam Davies MSN, CRNA, ARNP and I am a doctoral student at the University of North Florida. We are conducting a research study on preoperative screening of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) using the STOP-BANG questionnaire in order to reduce perioperative complications. If you voluntarily take part in this study, you will briefly read the educational pamphlet on Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) & preoperative screening using the STOP-BANG questionnaire and then complete a short survey. We expect that participation in this study will take about 15-20 minutes of your time to complete. Your responses will be kept anonymous. Only authorized personnel will have access to your responses.

4 Florida hospitals earn top Medicare rating
