General anesthesia linked to mortality in stroke patients

Although general anesthesia and conscious sedation seem to equally affect functional independence at discharge in patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing endovascular intervention therapy, patients who received general anesthesia experienced significantly greater mortality than their counterparts, researchers have found.

33 Florida hospitals rank in US News report
Health News Florida
Florida's largest hospital is also its best, according to the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals ranking. Florida Hospital in Orlando earned the state's top spot by ranking nationally in 10 of 16 specialties evaluated in the annual report. With 1,972 beds, the hospital is the largest in Florida and second-largest in the nation, according to Beck's Hospital Review.

New report cites modest success in new Florida healthcare signups

Several months after the end of the health exchange website, Florida still ranks No. 4 in the country for the highest rates of uninsured — 19 percent of the population still lacks health coverage. A new report from WalletHub looks at the rates of uninsured Floridians before and after the launch of the Affordable Care Act's health exchange website, looking at estimates of insured rates from several expert estimates.

Healthcare reform's elective surgery effects

The Affordable Care Act's expansion of the insured patient population could mean booming business for elective surgery providers in the next few years, say researchers at the University of Michigan. The researchers based this prediction, published online by JAMA Surgery, on surgical utilization trends in Massachusetts, which enacted statewide health insurance reform four years before the federal legislation was signed into law in 2010.

Nerve blocks linked to improved tissue oxygenation

Muscle oxygenation in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty may be positively affected by neuraxial blockade, a phenomenon that may confer s everal long-term benefits, researchers have found. The pilot study, by a team of American and Austrian researchers, showed that muscle oxygenation decreased more in the upper than the lower extremity, which may be the result of regional sympatholysis in the areas affected by neuraxial block and a subsequent net increase in perfusion in unaffected regions.
