VA proposes independent status for all advanced practice RNs

The Veterans Health Administration, the largest integrated health system in the country, is proposing to let its 3,600 advanced practice registered nurses work independently, even in states that require physician oversight of these clinicians. APRNs include nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse-midwives and clinical nurse specialists.

Nurse practitioners get new role

The Affordable Care Act is expected to bring insurance coverage to an additional 30 million Americans in January. This means a shortage of primary care providers for the growing number of patients. To combat this, at least 17 states are now allowing nurse practitioners to work without a supervising physician, according to Stateline, the news service of the Pew Charitable Trusts.
