Studies find sugammadex does not raise risk for serious bleeding

Sugammadex does not appear to promote bleeding or blood loss, according to a new study that contradicts previous results indicating the novel reversal agent could delay clotting. The international multicenter trial found that sugammadex did not appear to prolong activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time in surgical patients.

Electrical issue sparks anesthesia machine recall

Four models from Draeger Medical's Fabius line of anesthesia machines have been voluntarily recalled by the company due to an electrical malfunction that could impair their operation, says the FDA. The power supply on certain Fabius GS Premium, OS, Tiro and Tiro D-M machines lacked the minimum clearance between the electrical component and the unit housing, the company discovered, which could throw a complication into anesthesia providers' routine use.

Men who undergo urologic surgery on occasion experience an erection during the procedure — unwitting arousal that can force the delay, and even cancellation, of the operation. Now researchers in China have found that certain anesthetics used during urologic surgery are more likely to be associated with erections.

Patient safety group grades hospitals

The Leapfrog Group has released its latest grades for hospitals across the country. No Florida hospital earned the lowest grade of F, while 70 hospitals earned an A. Florida is seventh in the country for its percentage of A-rated hospitals, up three spots from the grades issued last spring.

'Designer' sedative may provide new alternative for colonoscopy

Developed using molecular-level techniques, the "designer" sedative drug remimazolam provides a promising new alternative for sedation in patients undergoing colonoscopy, reports a study in the November issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia. "Remimazolam has the attributes of a sedative drug, with success rates comparable with recent studies of other drugs," according to the new research, led by Dr Mark T. Worthington of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Very obese patients consume greater share of hospital resources

Patients who are morbidly obese use more hospital resources in the perioperative period, including longer operating room times and more time spent under anesthesia, a pair of new studies shows. Although more research is needed to tease out the reasons for the increase, experts said, hospitals may want to consider booking additional OR time for patients who are morbidly obese or have more personnel on hand to help position these patients for surgery.

Florida adds Medicaid managed care contracts

A report from analyst firm Stifel says Florida has added four more Medicaid managed care contracts in addition to the two insurers, Centene and WellCare, that were awarded contracts in September. In October, the state gave contracts to Aetna, Amerigroup, UnitedHealth and Molina.
