Sheriff seeks solutions for jail issues linked to lack of manpower

Sheriff Chris Blair is suggesting that some inmates held at the county jail while awaiting trial should be released from custody and monitored electronically to ease overcrowding at the facility. Blair said in a recent interview that the issue must be considered because understaffing of corrections officers at the jail creates a safety issue for his personnel, as sometimes a single deputy is responsible for hundreds of inmates.

"I grabbed my debit card, ran back into the store and bought things that would sustain her for a week or so and when I walked out she saw that I had the cart of groceries and she burst out in tears and asked if she could hug me, which is kind of unusual for the suspect to be hugging the officer," Miami-Dade police Officer Vicki Thomas said with a laugh. Sheriff wants to begin electronic monitoring program

"I wanted to look at a program to put monitors on those offenders that are actually taken into custody for a domestic violence issue or issued injunctions on domestic violence issues. So at that point we can monitor activity — so that if they come in contact in the area of the victim, we would be notified along with that victim," said Sheriff Chris Blair.
