Hospitals take on the financial cost of the emergency room visit and exam for sexual assault victims while the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office sets aside $15,000 a year to train nurses and buy forensic equipment and supplies.
“It’s been a challenge for a very long time to get programs up and running and to keep them supported so that there is sustainability for them,” said Augspurger, stating the Sheriff’s Office has played a big part in keeping services for sexual assault victims available in the county.
