Forty men and one woman face a slew of charges following a major Florida operation targeting people who use the Internet to arrange sexual encounters with children. Some of the suspects, who range in age from 18 to 65, traveled from as far as Wisconsin and Alabama to meet minors for expected sexual encounters.

Crisis management: Boston shows benefits, challenges of social media

It's becoming more apparent that Twitter and other new media channels such as Facebook are no longer just for personal users sharing what they're eating for dinner or their relationship status. With millions of users utilizing social media across multiple platforms including smartphones, tablets and personal computers, it's a powerful communications tool for law enforcement, when leveraged correctly. The chatter, however, can be overwhelming — sometimes even hindering law enforcement investigations with the sheer volume of information and factual inaccuracy.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has graduated another 25 people from the 39th class of the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy. CLEA is held one night a week for 10 weeks and gives citizens an inside look at operations. The course includes a tour of the jail and courthouse, and activities such as a ride-along with patrol, conducting felony traffic stops and firearms training. There are also sessions in law enforcement procedures, criminal investigations, K-9, SWAT and forensics, each taught by a subject matter expert.
Volunteer honored by Brevard sheriff's staff just short of 90th birthday

The staff and deputies of the Brevard County sheriff's south precinct office surprised one of their volunteers, Vince Wilson, with cake and ice cream. Wilson, who is about to turn 90, thought he'd been called in for a meeting. He's been a Citizen Observer Patrol volunteer in the Grant-Valkaria area for more than five years.

Charlotte County displays new patrol cars

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office has some new patrol cars out hitting the streets. The cars display a whole new look and features. The new 2013 Ford Police Interceptor vehicles are a specially designed "police package." They feature a special suspension system not normally found of "civilian" cars.
32 arrested in meth operation in St. Johns

Investigators, who still have warrants for 11 others, used pharmacy logs to track purchases of ingredients used to make the drug. In a two-day sweep, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office detectives were assisted with the arrests by city police departments and sheriff's offices in Clay and Flagler counties.

New law targets slower Florida drivers

A new law is forcing Florida drivers to move over if they are driving too slow. Those who do not move out of the way could pay a price. The Florida Highway Patrol says that speeders are one of their biggest concerns on the roads, but the new measure would mean law enforcement would have to focus more attention on those going well below the speed limit.
