Florida Sheriffs recognized several Tampa Bay-area lawmakers recently for "significant contributions to and support of good public safety policies" during the 2017 Legislative Session. The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) named five legislators — including Clearwater state Sen. Jack Latvala and Reps. James Grant of Tampa and Chris Sprowls of Palm Harbor — for their "commitment to protecting the best interests of Florida citizens" and support of FSA initiatives.

Afterward, they implemented a new alternative D.A.R.E. moniker: Define, Assess, Respond and Evaluate, to see how it applied. The Bay County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) has announced six arrests in an operation targeting the online sexual exploitation of children. During a two-week operation, agents from BCSO, Homeland Security Investigations, the National Center For Missing & Exploited Children and the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified seven Bay County addresses involved in downloading and distributing child pornography. A Clay County investigation revealed another address where a resident allegedly was communicating with and obtaining pornographic images online from a child.

Changes are planned within the Walton County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit to make dogs proficient in both drug detection and patrol work. In order to get the unit where he wants it to be, Walton Sheriff Mike Adkinson has decreed that three of the dogs presently in the employ of the Sheriff's Office be trained to standards set by the U.S. Police Canine Association.
