Report: Gambling could affect Florida's family-friendly pitch

If Florida decides to expand casino gambling, the move could harm the state and Orlando's tourist brand, says a new gaming report commissioned by the Florida Legislature. The report comes at a time when lawmakers plan to review and rewrite the state's gambling laws, and decide whether gambling should be expanded statewide.

Gadsden gets grant money for youth

Several hundred youth will have the opportunity to participate in a sports camp, thanks to a new grant. Florida's Department of Juvenile Justice gave more than $168,000 in grant money to Gadsden County. Sheriff Morris Young says about 40 young people have been able to go to camp in each of the last three years.

Miami man fatally shot over cellphone
WCTV-TV
Police say the suspect told them he and another person were looking to rob someone. They saw the victim with a cellphone, approached him and demanded that he hand it over. The 16-year-old told police the other person, who is also a teenager, held the victim at gunpoint.

'Operation Dry Water' calls attention to dangers of BUI

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office will be participating in Operation Dry Water June 28-30 as part of a nationally coordinated effort to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities related to boating under the influence. The mission of Operation Dry Water also brings awareness and education to recreational boaters about the dangers of alcohol and drug use on the water.
