Young BSO deputy dies after lengthy battle with cancer

Deputy Thomas O'Keefe was a third-generation law enforcement officer who followed in the career footsteps of his father and grandfather. He started working for BSO in 2003 at age 19. During his career, he served in the Tamarac, Deerfield Beach and Dania Beach districts. He also worked in multiple units in BSO’s Strategic Investigations Division.

Vernon Tyus Jr., staff officer, Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), assistant director (SYAL). "Their excitement culminates at the end when they are required to perform pulse-quickening maneuvers in a last-minute evasive skill," added Tyus, who explained that this is always a favorite with the students.

BSO deputies pull driver from burning car after crash

St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office unveils new emergency phone alert system

"For many years we have used a system called FirstCall so we can make targeted, real-time phone calls to neighborhoods where we need to contact people immediately," Sheriff Ken Mascara said. "If you've already signed up with FirstCall, your phone numbers will automatically transfer to the new system, called CodeRED."
