Escambia County Sheriff's investigators would like to remind the public to be wary of a continuing phone scam being perpetrated by con artists posing as law enforcement officers. In the scam, a caller claiming to represent the Escambia County Sheriff's Office or another law enforcement agency calls and demands money. Victims are told they must purchase a prepaid gift card and provide the card number and other information to the "officer" to avoid non-payment penalties.

The individual is usually out of control — posing a threat to themselves or others — and often not in a state of mind to comply with traditional law enforcement commands.
