Police in Tampa and St. Petersburg used a first-of-its-kind LTE cellular network dedicated to law enforcement as part of security operations for the Republican National Convention. The network was a demonstration project for the proposed National Public Safety Broadband Network, which would use the long term evolution standard to provide interoperable voice, video and data communications for first responders.

Three road races scheduled for the first Saturday of October will raise money for the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Charities Ranch Run will be Oct. 6 and feature 5K, 10K, and 15K running events. The runs will start and end at Temple Terrace Elementary School and offer golf course views from trails with light hills and moderate shade.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office working with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations, Northeast Florida Builders Association and Florida's Department of Financial Services arrested 11 unlicensed contractors after an undercover sting operation. As a result of the undercover work, police arrested 11 men, all charged with unlicensed contracting.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office spent months researching and planning the weeklong Operation Green Shepherd that was completed. Documented evidence and intent shown by 43 men arrested in the undercover internet child sex sting by the sheriff's office and assisting agencies should aid prosecution. Agents worked to secure the person in custody, conduct an interview, move him to the transport van and remove his vehicle from the property before the next suspect's arrival.

Sean Reyka became one of the newest deputies at the Broward Sheriff's Office. His father, Sgt. Chris Reyka, was fatally shot outside a Pompano Beach pharmacy in 2007. The slaying remains unsolved. Sean Reyka is a 24-year-old former Marine. He says he decided to pursue a career in law enforcement after his father's death.

Sheriff Jack Parker got his first look at a futuristic motorcycle that the Brevard County Sheriff's Office will use to help connect with youth in the community. Melbourne-based Parker Brothers Concepts, which stars in the Syfy channel TV reality series "Dream Machines," unveiled the two-wheeler during a law enforcement skills competition at Melbourne Square. The motorcycle will be used as a draw for teens at crime prevention events, according to the sheriff's office.

On the grounds of the Pasco jail, inmates run a farm, growing thousands of pounds of vegetables each year, raising hogs and cattle for slaughter. They even grow the ornamental plants used in the jail's landscaping. Sheriff Chris Nocco said the program is vital; it saves taxpayers' money and it teaches inmates about life.
