With 12 proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot, even the most diligent voters can get weary with the decisions to make. Now is a good time to commit Amendment 10 to memory. Known as the "protection amendment," it is appropriately named for all the ways it will protect you and your family. When passed, Amendment 10 will enact four provisions that are supported across all parties. It will: 1) preserve Florida’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs; 2) create a state office of domestic security and counterterrorism; 3) start legislative sessions earlier in even-numbered years; and 4) ensure that constitutional officers are elected instead of appointed.

"The importance of our Sheriffs in protecting Florida's families is widely acknowledged. But believe it or not, there are some who would take away people's right to elect your own Sheriff. One county has already done that," said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. This measure [Amendment 10] would mandate five local offices — sheriff, tax collector, supervisor of elections, clerk of court and property appraiser — be elected in all 67 counties. It would also prohibit charter counties from abolishing or modifying those offices. "I know there are a lot of amendments on this year's ballot. Some are confusing, but this amendment is straightforward and supported by all Florida Sheriffs," Gualtieri wrote.

Alachua County Public Schools and the sheriff's office are now teaming up to educate people on school bus safety and the dangers of not following the law. "What we hope to never happen is that a child gets hit or hurt or anyone gets hurt in a traffic crash situation especially with a bus involved," Alachua County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Levy said. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested 16 and has charges pending for 6 additional individuals in Operation Retrofit, an investigation targeting unlicensed contractors in the Bay Area. "One of these suspects traveled to our area specifically to target the elderly of Hillsborough County. It's despicable and we won't tolerate it. Shoddy work puts people's safety at risk. The consequences of poor construction or electrical work could be deadly," said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

A new Florida Department of Law Enforcement app as well as signs the Nassau County Sheriff's Office posted recently, could help when it comes to avoiding registered sexual offenders or predators. FDLE launched the new mobile app Monday, making it easy for people to see where sexual felons have registered a home address in Florida via a "Search Sexual Offenders and Predators" button. "I can't think of a better time to launch this app," FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen said. "I hope all parents will download this before going trick-or-treating and then use it often to help keep their families safe or to report suspicious activity." The app also allows people to search for active Amber, Missing Child and Silver alerts. It can seek out wanted suspects or stolen vehicle information, or submit a tip about suspicious activity, according to the department.
