Medical marijuana amendment falls short of approval

The outcome provided a victory for Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who served as the leading spokesman for the Vote No On 2 effort. Judd, immediate past president of the Florida Sheriffs Association, made numerous public appearances, speaking at churches and meetings of civic groups and appearing in public forums to argue against Amendment 2.
"I think what the people of Florida said tonight is they saw Amendment 2 as a train wreck," Judd said Tuesday night. "At the end of the day, the wisdom of the people of the state of Florida prevailed. Even though by the evidence of the vote, they have an interest in the medicinal purposes of marijuana but not an amendment that creates de facto legalization through loopholes."

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a ransom scam, where a caller gets information on someone from social media and then demands money for their safe return. Sheriff's deputies responded to several incidents in which a family member receives a phone call advising a loved one has been kidnapped.
