The flag outside the Nassau County Sheriff's Office was lowered to half staff Tuesday, just feet above a memorial surrounding the patrol car of a deputy who was killed earlier in the day while chasing a man on foot across State Road 200 in Yulee. Deputy Eric Oliver, who joined the Sheriff's Office in 2009 after serving five years in the U.S. Navy, will be remembered as a "hero," Sheriff Bill Leeper said."He has a history of serving our country and our community."

The Florida Sheriffs Association took in more than 6,600 pounds of prescription drugs in the operation pill drop that ran from Oct. 16 through Nov. 12. The Sheriffs Association says prescription pills are the most commonly used and abused drug among teenagers.

Crime continues to fall across Florida according to the 2016 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Report. The report shows Florida’s crime volume dropped 3.4 percent compared to the first six months of 2015. Governor Rick Scott said, “Florida’s steadily decreasing crime rate is a true testament to the hard work and commitment of our brave law enforcement officers.”

While his mother was preparing food in the kitchen, a 5-year-old Florida boy called 911 to invite law enforcement officers over for Thanksgiving dinner. Monica Webster of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office tells the News Herald that with all the bad calls they receive every day, this was a happy call. But young Billy Nolin’s family had no idea he’d invited guests to dinner.
