Leon Deputy Chris Smith remembered for kindness, leadership

In a few months, Leon County Deputy Chris Smith could have retired after 25 years in law enforcement. But it is not likely that he would have walked away. He loved it too much for that, his friends say. Despite working 12-to-14-hour shifts, sipping Dr. Pepper instead of coffee, he loved what he did. He was a seasoned deputy.Rookies respected badge No. 347. He was the kind of deputy who always wanted to be the first on scene.

Hardee chief deputy dies while working Thanksgiving

The chief deputy of the Hardee County Sheriff's Office died Thanksgiving of an apparent heart attack while sitting in his chair at work. "He came to work like it was any other day," said Sheriff Arnold Lanier commenting on Major Randy Dey's never-ending commitment to public safety.

Inscribed on the walls of the memorial is a scripture that means a great deal me, and others in the law enforcement profession, as it defines our true purpose and makes our profession not just a vocation but a calling.

Violent crime in Lake County shows decline

"The results of the 2014 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Report, which speak to the first half of this year, is testimony to the interagency cooperation and dedication of each and every sheriff, deputy, and law enforcement officer in the state," Florida Sheriffs Association President David Shoar said in the release. "The sheriffs of Florida will continue to aggressively fight crime, educate citizens and find innovative ways to serve our communities."
